  • A Squeak

    Donald R. Anderson
    A Squeak

    I was walking by,
    and she said "Hi, Don,"
    and all I could do,
    congested and needing
    to reach the rest room,
    was let out a squeak,
    my voice failing me.
    It's not me being meek,
    as much as feeling weak.

    Loopy, Smart, and Fool-hearted

    Donald R. Anderson
    Loopy, Smart, and Fool-hearted

She was loopy, smart, and fool-hearted.
Her spouse was the argumentative type,
a risk that almost, but not quite, caused physical harm.
    Things got progressively worse,
and she stayed with him anyway,
for a year, that dreadful deadly year,
    before parting ways.

They chatted about joining her friend's family
with that of her friend's spouse's,
and the rebellions of children to step parents,
and their not being at fault.
    So much unsaid,
so many faults, or flaws, overlooked.
So much could have been helped.
    A lifetime full of regrets,
and sad conversations sitting at the bar they would escape to.
Just familiarity, in the friends and places.
It was as if it were a country lifestyle in Stockton,
or as if time had been turned back a hundred years or more
    to frontier times,
    or simply back to neighborhoods
    and neighbors
    and a sense of home.

  • A Marriage of Differences

    Donald R. Anderson
    A Marriage of Differences

    We need to marry
    our cultures into a buffet,
instead of keeping each other out
    of each other's menu.
    A marriage of differences,
    where we admire each other
    for who we are,
    not tolerate but actually appreciate.
That's the way it should be.
